Happy Valentine´s Day!

Happy Valentine's Day! Red roses and a very rare fleece. Do you know what colors a Gotland Sheep can have? 7 different shades of grey, ranging from white to black. Gotlands should be grey, and since white is the dominant color in sheep, you do not use the whites in most flocks, It would overthrow the silvergrey. Approved colors for Gotland sheep are: Black Dark Grey Grey Light Grey Extra Light Grey White Grey White So, what if you want to have flock of white curly sheep with lustrous wool like this? You choose to breed Leicester Longwools, For extreme silkiness and shine, we can recommend Swedish blood lines, selected for these traits for many generations.

Swea.

Swea. 1 day & 4 months old. Kind of a rapid change and development from the "black, no curls" stage to a dark grey fleece with long lustrous locks. Happy for the uniform grey color of the lambs, growth gains and fleece quality. Will publish lamb stats on our website soon as well as preliminary EBV's.

Weaning time.

Our Gotland lambs are raised on pasture together with their mothers to the age of 110 days. At this time we wean all of them at once. This is normally done after the phenotypic evaluation we do. Evaluation is done to measure quantitative/qualitative expressions of different traits. We check weight, body conformation, wool and compare and grade each lamb according to the breed standard.

Gotland Lamb Evaluation & Breeding values

Our Gotlands are all evaluated @110 days of age. All lambs in the flock are weighed, scored for body conformation & wool parameters to provide phenotypic data. This foundation + pedigree information and parental/relatives data are all combined to calculate each individuals predicted genetic breeding value. What we see is an effect of genes and environmental factors, while calculations can show the unbiased genetic correlations. Beside the phenotypic check of each lamb and estmation of breeding value, other methods are used for measurements. We test wool samples for micron count, run genotypic tests and genetic pedigree verification + use scan of eyemuscle by ultrasound.
